Review : Sushi Q, Publika

Opening their first outlet in One Utama Shopping Mall at 2010, Sushi Q is mainly a takeaway sushi store commonly found in shopping malls in Klang Valley today. They do however offer seating space for the consumption of their sushi.

Their website indicates that they offer sushi-fusion and this is shown as their main offerings seems to be makizushi and inarizushi and often paired with non-traditional ingredients like mayonnaise, minced crab meat, corn and spicy salmon. They still have some raw fish nigiri which is mainly salmon and an unidentified white fish.

I purchased their sushi set which comprise mainly traditional nigiri, gunkan, maki and inarizushi and while presentation was decent, they offer great variety as there's no repeat in any sushi. Even the maki pieces offered all feature different ingredient. The wasabi offered is what you will expect from this kind of outlet but the soy used seems to be of the chinese soy variety which offer a stronger soy flavor and more bitter than shoyu commonly used for sushi.

Japanese shortgrain rice is used for the sushi-meshi and it's pleasing to see that the rice balls appear to be molded by hand where most other takeaway sushi will use a machine to press their sushi-meshi. The rice held somewhat tightly together still although its individual grain is not sticky. The rice tasted average with not much flavor.

Their salmon nigiri is not too big making it easy for one mouthful.
Picking up the salmon nigiri, it's build is one of the best among takeaway sushi variety. The salmon sashimi was sliced to wrap the rice. The sashimi piece appear to be hand pressed on the rice to give the sushi it's signature look. Among all takeaway sushi, this salmon nigiri turns out to be one of best ones you can get. Their other offerings is pretty much standard canned tuna, ebiko and offers nothing above average.

Their makizushi is also well made with the rice not too tightly rolled
Sushi Q's traditional sushi offering exceed from what you would normally expect from your average off the shelf takeaway sushi, even topping most conveyor belt sushi restaurants. They do have limited variety of sashimi to go along with their sushi, and instead opt to offer more western style sushi variety. They have a good grasp on what makes a good sushi but opted to feature more fusion ingredients. Still, it's a decent place to get your sushi on the go.
